A review of Sacred Heart Church by Margaret G. Lucas written on Tuesday 23rd of December 2008
I have so many memories of Sacred Heart Church Mere Rd Leicester I hardly know where to begin.
My name might be a good start. Margaret Gwynyth Tune Lucas. Formally Burke. (commonly know in those far off days as "Burky") My address was Palm Villa 61 Mere Rd. Only a block or so from the church where I went to mass most mornings until I left home to become an SRN (England and Wales.) and later a Registered Professional Nurse in the US Where my career was a long and happy one and ended with my last years as an Ass't Director of Nursing Services in a 385 bed facility. Wouldn't Dear Sr Alberta and Sr Loyola be shocked to know that M Burke, that naughty girl made something useful and successful of her life?
Back to memories, I used to walk up the hill to the church which was ALWAYS unlocked, and sit alone in the back in the near dark with only candles alight which gave a lovely glow. Sometimes Miss Birkett or Zilla Huntley Daley Or Henry Hough would be playing the organ and I would sit or kneel entranced with the sound of the music they made.Incidentally Music has always been my passion, Opera, Lieder and piano music are my favourites, which I still enjoy playing.(Piano)
One of my most vivid memories is one in which durin
WW2 One of my lifelong best friends Maureen (the other being Shiela) and I were at Benediction when the air raid sirens started to wail, a very eery sound. We all repaired post haste to the guild hall below the church and remained there till dawn the next morning, when sadly Maureen discovered her home was a little pile of bricks in a crater made by a bomb!! Another tragedy which occurred that night was that of a family whose name I can't quite recall,Three little girls and their Mother were killed while their father was above ground in their home making hot chocolate. I remember their funeral left a life long impression on us all
Well now to happier times, The Maypole, and the May Processions, and First Holy Communion. The concerts and socials and dances held in the Guildhall. I always had to sing, sometimes Cherry Ripe (Which I came to thoroughly dislike), Sheep may Safely Graze
The laughing song from Die Fledermaus, and Musetta's waltz song from La Boheme. To name a few.
Must close, I would love to hear drom anyone who remembers the time I have mentioned,or me,I am nearing 81 yrs, so probably not too many left.
Best wishes and a Happy and Holy Christmas from the
Beautiful Ozark mountains of SW Missouri.
Sleep gently and dream sweetly
Margaret Lucas, Nee burke.
