A review of Choi's by AlanF written on Thursday 31st of March 2011
Early Saturday evening; town was very quiet, restaurant less than quarter full.
2 Chinese female staff, 2 English lads – from the school? And who appeared to have had very little training. 1 showed us to the table and asked for our drinks order as soon as we sat down and before giving us the drinks menu!
We were presented with – free – prawn crackers when we sat down but they looked very tired and were greasy. Dust on the faded, tatty, artificial flowers.
Very expensive drinks and the waiter didn’t know if the, bottled beers – no draught - were 250, 330 or 660 mls.
We ordered the set meal S5, two courses. Crispy duck was good. We asked for the sizzling beef without chilli; the waiter took the dish away twice – it was initially the wrong dish, it then had chilli which we had specifically requested not to be included.
The main gripe, bordering on fraud?, was that the portions were less than half of what one would expect from the a la carte menu (and from other restaurants) – and were expected to feed 2 people. One of the waiters said it was standard practice ‘that they were less than a standard portion’.
Very grisly chicken was given to us as a complimentary offer - after we had finished the main course.
Another couple who had a set meal also complained – for very much the same reasons as us. They were also given a complimentary dish.
The Chinese lady (the Manager?) arrived to take the order from a table of 6 before they even had a menu. This was at least 20 minutes after they had arrived.
Another reviewer has mentioned that staff are well trained – they are not.
A glass of water was held, in several fingers, by the rim, leaving finger prints. And received after several requests!
Interestingly, they appear to ignore comments on review sites as their service and portion size does not appear to have changed in several years.
Wishing you the best of luck if you do eat there!!.
